  1. This photo was taken in the south of Sagar Island in West Bengali, India, at the confluence of the Hooghly River (Ganga) and the Bay of Bengal. We can see women drying colourful traditional clothes, presumably after the sacred ritual bathing in the Gangasagar estuary during the Gangasagar Mela, the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal. The holy dip takes place on 14 January, the day of the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti. (I haven’t been to India.)

  2. Wow, Ana B. that was a well thought out and informative response. Thank you, now I need to go read more on the subject.

  3. It is definitely near any of the ghats(religious bathing place) in India. It could be in Bengal or Varanasi or any other ghat in north india. My guess is that it could be Gangasagar celebrations in west Bengal near any of those islands or it could be the banks in Kolkatta or in Uttrakhand state near any of the ghats where women are drying their sarees after the holy dip.
